HISTORY AND SONG NOTES

This Little Light of Mine is a traditional American folksong. Believed to have been composed as a children’s song by Harry Dixon Loes in the 1920s, This Little Light of Mine became strongly associated with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Many versions of the song have been created, as have many children’s books that center around the song.

In addition to the above, there are other traditional verses that the children may enjoy singing. They may also enjoy creating their own verses! Some options include:

Hide it under a bushel, No!, I’m gonna let it shine…

Won’t let no one (anyone) blow it out, I’m gonna let it shine…

All around my neighborhood, I’m gonna let it shine…

In my neighbor’s home, I’m gonna let it shine…

Singing

While listening to or singing this song, the children may move their bodies to feel the beat and meter of the song. They can also experience different dynamics by singing piano and forte; the repetitive nature of the tune and lyrics supports the children’s growing confidence and singing abilities.
