Kokoleoko
Liberia
HISTORY AND SONG NOTES
Kokoleoko is a Liberian folksong that is a song about a rooster crowing at sunrise. The word “kokoleoko” is similar to “cock-a-doodle-doo,” such as the sound that a rooster makes.
This song has three separate sections, as indicated in the three lines of the score above. It can be sung straight through as written, or the three parts may be sung simultaneously; you can hear an example of this in the recording below. Part singing is difficult for young children, but they may enjoy hearing what that sounds like, and providing opportunities for them to hear part singing helps to develop their understanding and perception of harmony. In addition to the recording below, they may enjoy hearing you or another teacher sing the other parts, while they sing the part with which they are most confident.
